I believe it is a key characteristic between undefined variables and null variables, that being that typeof null evaluates to `object` while this same isn't true for undefined variables.

現実的には・・・表現が固いので変更しました。
および拡張 Web アプリケーションによって・・・原文の "by extension web applications" ですが、これは手段を表す "by" ではなく "by extension" で一つの成句で「拡大解釈すると」という意味なので「さらには」と訳しました。
XML・・・JavaScript 固有のメリットがあるのはJSONの方です。これは原文が文法ミスですね。
